Higher Seminar in theoretical philosophy: Mark Bowker "Do Generic Generalisations Lead to Entrenched Prejudice?"
Abstract: Some philosophers have raised concerns that accepting generic generalisations like 'Immigrants are dangerous' entrenches our prejudices by leading us to ignore evidence that conflicts with them. In this talk, I present experimental results which show that insensitivity to counterevidence is, at least, not a universal characteristic of generic generalisations.
