Intimate friendship and moral advice

When we look for moral advice – we face a difficult situation, a troubled relationship – we will typically turn to our friends. Friends rely on each other in difficult moments for practical guidance. But on the face of it this is puzzling. The fact that someone is my friend does not make them an expert on moral matters. Why should someone's being a friend make them a reliable authority on how to navigate a complex relationship? My aim in this paper is to examine what makes for good advice. I then draw out the features of friendship that do make friends particularly suitable for taking on the role of moral advisor. Finally, I suggest that giving and taking advice is a core feature of friendship – it is part of the "mutual receptivity" that constitutes intimate friendship.
