Higher Sem in Practical Philosophy: Kevin Mulligan "Correlates, Correlations & Correlationisms"

10 april 2025 13:15 till 15:00 Seminarium

The Department of Philosophy is delighted to welcome Prof Kevin Mulligan from Università della Svizzera italiana,

He will give a self-contained talk at the Higher seminar in practical philosophy, entitled

Correlates, Correlations & Correlationisms

abstract: An important feature of many types of mental acts and states is that their modal or attitudinal dimensions are or seem to be correlated with what have been called their “objective correlates” or “formal objects”. Two correlations of particular interest to Lund philosophers are belief-probability and pro/contra attitudes-(dis)value. But such (putative) couples are in fact omnipresent - belief/judgment – truth, acceptance – existence, memory-past, imagination-possibility, resistance-reality…. This talk explores the possibility of a unified account of such couples. Is there (could there be) one correct account of the modal/attitudinal dimensions of acts and states, one correct account of objective correlates, and one correct account of their correlations?

Here is some information from USI:s webpage: "He funded the European Society for Analytic Philosophy (ESAP) and thumos, and co-founded eidos – the Geneva-Lugano centre for metaphysics - and Inbegriff - the Geneva Seminar for Austro-German philosophy, and is a member of the Royal Swedish Academy of Letters and of the Academia Europaea.

He has taught philosophy in Aix, Barcelona, Constance, Dublin, Florence, Freiburg, Hamburg, Innsbruck, Irvine, Lausanne, Lucerne, Lugano, Paris, Pennsylvania, Rome, Santiago de Compostela, Sydney, Venice, Trento, Umea and Zurich.
