Molecular cloning and tissue distribution of cDNA encoding a novel chemoattractant-like receptor

With the application of a homology screening strategy, including PCR amplification and southern blot hybridization, a novel cDNA was cloned from rat liver and anterior pituitary libraries. It was found to encode a 371-amino acid protein which has the characteristics of a heptahelix receptor and shows structural identity to members of the chemoattractant receptor family. A primary receptor message

A determination of the centre-of-mass energy at LEP2 using radiative two-fermion events

Using e(+)e(-) -> mu(+)mu(-)(gamma) and e(+)e(-) -> q (q) over bar(gamma) events radiative to the Z pole, DELPHI has determined the centre-of-mass energy, root s, using energy and momentum constraint methods. The results are expressed as deviations from the nominal LEP centre-of-mass energy, measured using other techniques. The results are found to be compatible with the LEP Energy Working Group e

Activated protein C-protein C inhibitor complex: a new biological marker for aortic aneurysms.

Objective: The concentration of the complex between activated protein C (APC) and protein C inhibitor (PCI) is a measure of thrombin generation. We studied whether it can provide information useful for the diagnosis and treatment of arterial vascular disease. Methods: Blood was obtained from 429 vascular patients admitted consecutively during September 2004 to March 2005. The APC-PCI complex was m

Patterns of alcohol consumption in 10 European countries participating in the European Prospective Investigation into Cancer and Nutrition (EPIC) project

Objective. The aim of this study was to compare the quantities of alcohol and types of alcoholic beverages consumed, and the timing of consumption, in centres participating in the European Prospective Investigation into Cancer and Nutrition (EPIC). These centres, in 10 European countries, are characterised by widely differing drinking habits and frequencies of alcohol-related diseases. Methods: We

Measurements of stellar magnetic fields using synthetic spectrum fitting

A sample of Ap and Bp stars have been investigated with respect to theirsurface magnetic field using synthetic spectrum fitting. The advantageof this technique is the simplicity in determining the surface fieldstrength and the possibility to apply it to objects whose spectrum doesnot display resolved Zeeman components. We show the usefulness of themethod by demonstrations on stellar spectra with r

Svaren visar nämligen hur intellektuella politiker under kristider producerar och presenterar innovativa lösningar som kan få stor betydelse för samhällsutA new theory on the intellectual politician, which has the ability to produce a designed type of problem-solving, has been developed from political science theory, cognitive theory as well as art theory. A cognitive concept, modified integrative complexity, consisting of four sub-concepts, frame reflection, differentiation, reframing and integration has been developed. The relation between politic

Plasma homocysteine in the acute and convalescent phases after stroke

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Stroke patients frequently manifest moderate hyperhomocysteinemia. In most published studies, plasma homocysteine was measured at least 1 month after stroke (or the interval was not reported). To determine whether plasma homocysteine concentrations change in the acute phase, we compared acute-phase values with both convalescent-phase and control values. METHODS: Plasma homo

Isothermal calorimetry approach to evaluate the effect of tissue wounding on vegetable metabolism

We have made a study by isothermal calorimetry of the heat production response of root and tuber tissue to wounding. Samples with different surface to volume ratios were prepared from carrots, potatoes and swedes (rutabaga) and the overall metabolic heat was measured in closed glass ampoules in a TAM Air isothermal calorimeter. The evaluation was made by assuming that a certain heat production rat

Variation in adult annual survival probability and remigration intervals of sea turtles

We analyzed a large dataset to quantify adult annual survival probability and remigration intervals for the Tortuguero, Costa Rica green turtle population. Annual survival probability was estimated at 0.85 (95% CI 0.75-0.92) using a recovery model and at 0.85 (95% CI 0.83-0.87) using an open robust design model. The two most common modes of remigration are 2 and 3 years. Annual survival probabilit

Diffusion Dynamics and the Pricing of Innovations

This doctoral thesis deals with two closely interconnected phenomena, the adoption and diffusion of innovations. The research aims at developing both the theory of individual adoption decisions and the theory of the diffusion of an innovation in society. Especially how the pricing of an innovation tends to influence adoption and diffusion is focused. Two empirical studies within the telecommunicat

Take care in how you store your PD fluids: Actual temperature determines the balance between reactive and non-reactive GDPs

Objective: During heat sterilization and during prolonged storage, glucose in peritoneal dialysis fluids (PDF) degrades to carbonyl compounds commonly known as glucose degradation products (GDPs). Of these, 3,4-dideoxyglucosone-3-ene (3,4-DGE) is the most cytotoxic. It is an intermediate in degradation between 3-deoxyglucosone (3-DG) and 5-hydroxymethyl-2-furaldehyde (5-HMF). We have earlier repor

Separation of amino acids and peptides by temperature induced phase partitioning. Theoretical model for partitioning and experimental data

There is a strong interest in use of `smart polymers' in separation systems. These are polymers which can react on external influence, such as temperature or pH change. With such polymers it is possible from the outside to affect the properties of a separation system. Amphiphilic copolymers show drastic changes in solubility properties, such as self-association and phase separation, at e.g. temper

Crossings and maxima in Gaussian fields and seas

Reglerna omfattar bland annat medelnivån, hur vanliIn this thesis the focus is on crossing points in random fields and the probability distributions of various crossing variables in different applications. The crossing points are generalisations to random fields of points of level crossings by stochastic processes. Only crossing events that occur at distinct points in the parameter space are considered, for example stationary points (zero-crossing

A 14-year prospective study of autonomic nerve function in Type 1 diabetic patients: association with nephropathy.

Aims Prospective studies of autonomic nerve function are rare. We have followed the progression of autonomic dysfunction in relation to nephropathy over 14 years in Type 1 diabetic patients. Methods Autonomic nerve function was assessed by heart-rate responses to deep breathing (E/I ratio) and tilting (acceleration and brake indices) and by the postural blood pressure reaction in 58 patients, 43
