Interaction of recombinant human cystatin C with the cysteine proteinases papain and actinidin

The interaction between recombinant human cystatin C and the cysteine proteinases papain and actinidin was studied by spectroscopic, kinetic and equilibrium methods. The absorption, near-u.v.c.d. and fluorescence-emission difference spectra for the cystatin C-proteinase interactions were all found to be similar to the corresponding spectra for chicken cystatin. The kinetics of binding of cystatin

Prevalence of asthma in young cross-country skiers in central Scandinavia: differences between Norway and Sweden

An increased prevalence of asthma in cross-country skiers has been reported previously. This study was conducted in order to evaluate the prevalence of asthma among young, elite cross-country skiers in Trondelag, Norway and Jamtland, Sweden. These two regions in central Scandinavia have different climates during the winter season, with a coastal type in Trondelag while Jamtland is characterized by

Diagnostic delay and prognosis in invasive bladder cancer

Objectives: To study diagnostic delay in invasive bladder cancer in a population-based material with long-term follow-up, and to evaluate whether delay in diagnosis affects the risk of bladder cancer death. Material and Methods: In a previous study, 177 patients with invasive bladder cancer (T1-T4) diagnosed in 1988 were investigated with regard to diagnostic delay. A review of all available clini

Promoting equality between women and men in bilateral development cooperation : Concepts, goals, rationales and institutional arrangements. Part One. Theory, practice and priorities for change. Part Two. Empirical studies in two sectors in Tanzania: Household water supplies and health development.

Som uppföljning på FNs fjärde kvinnokonferens i Peking (1995) är det viktigt att analysera vad Gender equality has been on the development cooperation agenda for more than three decades. Bilateral agencies have developed policies, strategies, methodologies and tools to support achievement of this important goal. Following the Fourth United Nations Conference on Women in Beijing in 1995 it is important to take stock of the progress that has been made, and identify the changes needed for movi

Hypervolemia in cerebral vasospasm

Object. Arterial vasospasm is the most common cause of delayed ischemic neurological deficits (DINDs) and one of the major causes of disability following subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH). Current management of vasospasm involves intravascular volume expansion and hemodynamic augmentation with the goal of increasing cerebral blood flow (CBF). The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of vol

Nonlinear waveguides

We investigate the propagation of electromagnetic waves in a cylindrical waveguide with an arbitrary cross section filled with a nonlinear material. The electromagnetic field is expanded in the usual eigenmodes of the waveguide, and the coupling between the modes is quantified. We derive the wave equations governing each mode with special emphasis on the situation with a dominant TE mode. The resu

CD46 in meningococcal disease

The human-specific bacterial pathogen Neisseria meningitidis is a major cause of sepsis and/or meningitis. The pili of N. meningitidis interact with CD46, a human cell-surface protein involved in regulation of complement activation. Transgenic mice expressing human CD46 were susceptible to meningococcal disease, because bacteria crossed the blood-brain barrier in these mice. Development of disease

Theoretical Study of the Fast Photodissociation Channels of the Monohalobenzenes

Excited state properties of fluorobenzene, chlorobenzene, bromobenzene, and iodobenzene have been investigated theoretically using multireference CASSCF and CASPT2 methods. Experimentally, chlorobenzene and bromobenzene are known to exhibit one fast dissociation channel, whereas iodobenzene exhibits two fast dissociation channels. The calculations indicate that the chlorobenzene, the bromobenzene,

A critical appraisal of the use of umbilical artery Doppler ultrasound in high-risk pregnancies: use of meta-analyses in evidence-based obstetrics

Objectives To reanalyze randomized controlled trials on the use of umbilical artery Doppler velocimetry in high-risk pregnancies and determine which high-risk pregnancies benefit from the use of Doppler velocimetry, Methods Searching Medline, the Cochrane Library and Embase we found 13 randomized controlled trials on the use of Doppler velocimetry in high-risk pregnancies. Of these, six included p

Atomistic simulations of tensile and bending properties of single-crystal BCC-Iron nanobeams

In this paper, we report the results of a systematic study of the elastic properties of nanosized single-crystal wires and beams of bcc iron. Both tensile and bending stiffnesses have been determined employing molecular statics simulations for specimens of different sizes and three different crystallographic orientations. We also analyze the influence of circular cross sections and rounded edges c

Bioinformatics in proteomics

Several genome sequencing projects have recently been completed and the majority of human coding regions have been sequenced. In the next step many of the further studies will concentrate on proteins. Proteomics methods are essential for studying protein expression. activity, regulation and modifications. Bioinformatics is an integral part of proteomics research. The recent developments and applic

Sensor Integration in Task-level Programming and Industrial Robotic Task Execution Control

Presents an approach to improved performance and flexibility in industrial robotics by means of sensor integration and feedback control in task-level programming and task execution. Also presents feasibility studies in support of the ideas. Discusses some solutions to the problem using six degrees of freedom force control together with the ABB S4CPlus system as an illustrative example. Consider va

Inter- and intramolecular potential for the N-formylglycinamide-water system. A comparison between theoretical modeling and empirical force fields

An intramolecular NEMO potential is presented for the N-formylglycinamide molecule together with an intermolecular potential for the N-formylglycinamide-water system. The intramolecular N-formylglycinamide potential can be used as a building block for the backbone of polypeptides and proteins. Two intramolecular minima have been obtained. One, denoted as C5, is stabilized by a hydrogen bonded five

Ramadan in Java : The Joy and Jihad of Ritual Fasting

DURING THE holy month of Ramadan is both a joy and a jihad for the Islamic community in Java, and it is arguably the most highly esteemed Muslim ritual in Indonesia (and beyond). To be given the opportunity to abstain from food, drink and sexual relations from the early morning hours until sunset during an entire month in a tropical climate - only to fill the nights with additional and sup

The 39-item Parkinson's disease questionnaire (PDQ-39) revisited: implications for evidence-based medicine.

Background: The 39 item Parkinson's disease questionnaire (PDQ-39) is the most widely used patient reported rating scale in Parkinson's disease. However, several fundamental measurement assumptions necessary for confident use and interpretation of the eight PDQ-39 scales have not been fully addressed. Methods: Postal survey PDQ-39 data from 202 people with Parkinson's disease (54% men; mean age 70
