Severe Pasteurella multocida infections in pregnant women

We report 2 cases of severe infections due to Pasteurella multocida, both occurring during pregnancy in previously healthy women. Both women had contact with animals (dog and cat) but neither of them had been bitten. Apart from a slight decrease in IgG levels, no immunological defects could be detected. Both women had received oral phenoxymethylpenicillin in the early phase of the disease, but sti

Transient electromagnetic wave propagation in laterally discontinuous, dispersive media

This paper concerns propagation of transient electromagnetic waves in laterally discontinuous dispersive media. The approach, used here, employs a component decomposition of all fields. Specifically, the propagation operator that maps a transverse field on one plane to another plane is specified. Expansion of this mapping near the wave front determines the precursor or forerunner of the problem.

Thorium exposure during tungsten inert gas welding with thoriated tungsten electrodes

The exposure to Th-232 from TIG welding with thoriated electrodes has been determined at five different workshops. Welding with both alternating and direct current was investigated. The exposure levels of Th-232 were generally below 10 mBq m(-3) in the breathing zone of the welders. Two samples from AC welding showed significant higher exposure levels, probably due to maladjustment of the TIG weld

Prospect for vaginal delivery of growth restricted fetuses with abnormal umbilical artery blood flow.

Background. The best mode of delivery in cases of intrauterine growth restriction (IUGR) with umbilical artery blood flow changes is not well elucidated. Objective. To evaluate outcome in IUGR with umbilical artery blood flow changes planned for vaginal delivery after a negative oxytocin challenge test (OCT). Methods. In 84 term singleton pregnancies with suspected IUGR and no unanimous indicati

Extraocular muscle is spared upon complete laminin alpha2 chain deficiency: Comparative expression of laminin and integrin isoforms.

Mutations in the gene encoding laminin (LM) alpha 2 chain cause congenital muscular dystrophy. Here, we show that extraocular muscle (EOM) is spared upon complete LM alpha 2 chain absence. The major LM chains in limb muscle basement membranes are alpha 2, beta 1, beta 2 and gamma 1 whereas alpha 2, alpha 4, beta 1, beta 2 and gamma 1 chains are expressed in EOM. Expression of LMoA chain mRNA is fu

Effect of cinnamon on postprandial blood glucose, gastric emptying, and satiety in healthy subjects

Background: Previous studies of patients with type 2 diabetes showed that cinnamon lowers fasting serum glucose, triacylglycerol, and LDL- and total cholesterol concentrations. Objective: We aimed to study the effect of cinnamon on the rate of gastric emptying, the postprandial blood glucose response, and satiety in healthy subjects. Design: The gastric emptying rate (GER) was measured by using st

Fru Nanna Grönvalls bokbinderi

At the age of 33 and mother of seven children (the husband a shawowy figure), Mrs Grönvall started a small but soon renowed hand book bindery in the town of Malmö in Southern Sweden in 1893. Mostly self-taught herself, through the years she housed and trained several apprentices and journeyman of wich some opened binderies of their own. At the Arts and Crafts Exhibition in Malmö 1907 she was award

Assessment of groundwater vulnerability in the Rio Artiguas basin, Nicaragua

The Rio Artiguas basin in central Nicaragua shows a distinctive case of environmental deterioration due to anthropogenic activities. Heavy metals used in gold mining and other wastes are continuously released into the rivers, representing a threat to the water quality. This article aims to evaluate the groundwater intrinsic vulnerability in the Rio Artiguas basin and to provide information for sus

A general model for calculating pressure drop in siphons and siphon riser tubes. Part 2: Experimental results

A general model for pressure drop calculations in siphons and riser tubes has been developed. The model takes into account different physical flow phenomena such as the inlet pressure drop and the pressure drop in the tube. For each phenomenon, we applied theory and established correlations to calculate the separate accelerational, frictional, gravitational, and centrifugal pressure drops. Model r
