Investigation of the stability of Mn-12 single molecule magnets

The stability of single crystals and monolayers of Mn-12 single molecule magnets under the influence of X-ray radiation and other possibly disruptive influences has been investigated by means of synchrotron radiation. Clear evidence for radiation induced sample degradation was found for both single crystals and monolayers. The comparison with spectra obtained after damaging the molecules by Ar+ sp

Max-stretch reduction for tree spanners

A tree t-spanner T of a graph G is a spanning tree of G whose max-stretch is t, i.e., the distance between any two vertices in T is at most t times their distance in G. If G has a tree t-spanner but not a tree (t - 1)-spanner, then G is said to have max-stretch of t. In this paper, we study the Max-Stretch Reduction Problem: for an unweighted graph G = (V, E), find a set of edges not in E original

Attack the dragon

Dragon is a word oriented stream cipher submitted to the ECRYPT project, it operates on key sizes of 128 and 256 bits. The original idea of the design is to use a nonlinear feedback shift register (NLFSR) and a linear part (counter), combined by a filter function to generate a new state of the NLFSR and produce the keystream. The internal state of the cipher is 1088 bits, i.e., any kinds of TMD at

Nutrition and aberrant DNA methylation patterns in atherosclerosis: More than just hyperhomocysteinemia?

Methylation is a reversible modification of DNA participating in epigenetic regulation of gene expression. It is now clear that atherosclerosis is associated with aberrant DNA methylation patterns in the vascular tissue and peripheral blood cells, but the origin of this anomaly is poorly understood. Based on evidence that global DNA hypomethylation coexists with hyperhomocysteinemia in advanced hu

Imprinted polymers - Tailor-made mimics of antibodies and receptors

The technique of molecular imprinting allows the formation of specific recognition sites in synthetic polymers through the use of templates or imprint molecules. These recognition sites mimic the binding sites of antibodies and other biological receptor molecules. Molecularly imprinted polymers can therefore be used in applications relying on specific molecular binding events. The stability, ease

Natural killer T-cell populations in C57BL/6 and NK1.1 congenic BALB.NK mice-a novel thymic subset defined in BALB.NK mice.

Natural killer (NK) T lymphocytes are a subpopulation of T lymphocytes regarded as early regulators of immune responses. The majority of NKT cells are restricted by the CD1d molecule. NKT cells have mostly been studied in one single mouse strain, C57BL/6 (B6), because of the absence of NK1.1 in other common mouse strains, and the lack of other reliable surface markers for CD1d-restricted cells. To

Paediatric day care surgery increased parental participation reduces costs

In this paper, the marginal or incremental consequences of increased parental participation in a day-care surgery unit are analysed. Information about the parental role and instruction concer treatment caused parents to assume a greater share of their child's postoperative care. This advantages for the involved participants. Children and their parents spent a shorter time at the attributable to nu

Cyld inhibits tumor cell proliferation by blocking Bcl-3-dependent NF-kappaB signaling

Mutations in the CYLD gene cause tumors of hair-follicle keratinocytes. The CYLD gene encodes a deubiquitinase that removes lysine 63-linked ubiquitin chains from TRAF2 and inhibits p65/p50 NF-kappaB activation. Here we show that mice lacking Cyld are highly susceptible to chemically induced skin tumors. Cyld-/- tumors and keratinocytes treated with 12-O-tetradecanoylphorbol-13 acetate (TPA) or UV

The impact of routine outcome measurement on treatment processes in community mental health care – approach and methods of the MECCA study

Three issues characterise the background to the MECCA study: A) Throughout Europe, most patients with severe forms of psychotic disorders are cared for in the community. The challenge now is to make processes in community mental health care more effective. B) There are widespread calls to implement regular outcome measurement in routine settings. This, however, is more likely to happen, if it prov

Anionic Graft Copolymers Containing Poly(ethylene oxide)

Anionic graft copolymers were prepared through ring-opening anhydride reactions between poly(ethylene oxide) monomethyl ethers (MPEG) and copolymers of maleic anhydride and styrene (SMA), methyl vinyl ether (MEMA) and ethylene (EMA), respectively. The carboxylic acid groups in the graft copolymers were neutralized with KOH, and films were prepared by solution casting. The materials were characteri

Quantification of protein adducts of hexahydrophthalic anhydride and methylhexahydrophthalic anhydride in human plasma

Hexahydrophthalic anhydride (HHPA) and methylhexahydrophthalic anhydride (MHHPA) are two highly allergenic compounds used in the chemical industry. A method was developed for quantification of protein adducts of HHPA and MHHPA in human plasma. The plasma was dialysed and the anhydrides were hydrolysed from the proteins at mild acidic conditions. The released hexahydrophthalic acid (HHP acid) and m

Sensitivity of aerosol and cloud effects on radiation to cloud types: comparison between deep convective clouds and warm stratiform clouds over one-day period

Cloud and aerosol effects on radiation in two contrasting cloud types, a deep mesoscale convective system (MCS) and warm stratocumulus clouds, are simulated and compared. At the top of the atmosphere, 45-81% of shortwave cloud forcing (SCF) is offset by longwave cloud forcing (LCF) in the MCS, whereas warm stratiform clouds show the offset of less than similar to 20%. 28% of increased negative SCF

Aortic pathology revealed by MRI in patients with clinical suspicion of spinal disease

In five patients with clinical suspicion of spinal disease, MRI of the spine revealed unexpected aortic pathology explaining the symptoms. No significant intraspinal pathology was found on MRI. However, in one patient with clinical suspicion of spinal stenosis, an aortic occlusion was detected on MR images of the spine. The lower extremity ischaemia, caused by the occlusion, was responsible for th
