Factor VIII inhibitors in two families with mild haemophilia A: structural analysis of the mutations
The development of inhibitory antibodies against coagulation factor VIII (FVIII) in patients with mild haemophilia A is uncommon. We describe here two families in which three or two members have developed inhibitors, suggesting a familial predisposition. The mutations found, in the A2 (Arg593Cys) and C1 domains (Tyr2105Cys), have been reported to give rise to inhibitor development in single indivi

Optimization toward a high-average-brightness soft-x-ray laser pumped at grazing incidence
We report the near-field imaging characterization of a 10 Hz Ni-like 18.9 nm molybdenum soft-x-ray laser pumped in a grazing incidence pumping (GRIP) geometry with a table-top laser driver. We investigate the effect of varying the GRIP angle on the spatial behavior of the soft-x-ray laser source. After multiparameter optimization, we were able to find conditions to generate routinely a high-repeti
Radiographic prediction of failure after fixation of cervical hip fracture
During 1984-1985, 410 patients with cervical hip fracture were randomized between 2 methods of internal fixation--a single nail (Rydell) or 2 LIH hook pins (LIH). The patients were followed-up prospectively for at least 2 years. Radiographs were taken after 1 week, 1, 3, 6, 12, and 24 months. The radiographs of the 295 patients alive 2 years postoperatively were examined by one of the authors. The

Marsupial relationships and a timeline for marsupial radiation in South Gondwana
Recent marsupials include about 280 species divided into 18 families and seven orders. Approximately 200 species live in Australia/New Guinea. The remaining species inhabit South America with some of these secondarily ranging into North America. In this study, we examine marsupial relationships and estimate their divergences times using complete mitochondrial (mt) genomes. The sampling, which incl

Should heritage management be democratized? The Denkmalpflegediskussion in Germany.
This paper is about the recent discussions (known as Denkmalpflegediskussion) on the general organization of heritage management in Germany. The main issue discussed was whether heritage management should be further denationalized (’entstaatlicht’) and made the responsibility of individual citizens in order to serve better both the monuments and the people. A number of fundamental criticisms were
Serum Cholesterol, Lifestyle, Working Capacity and Quality of Life in Patients with Coronary Artery Disease. Experiences from a Hospital-based Secondary Prevention Programme
Coronary artery diseases (CAD) are main causes of morbidity and hospitalisation in western countries and CAD patients are at considerable risk of suffering further cardiac events. The development and evaluation of secondary prevention programmes therefore an important task. This thesis includes investigations on CAD patients admitted to a secondary prevention programme at Malmö University Hospital
Co-localization of L-type Ca2+ channels and insulin-containing secretory granules and its significance for the initiation of exocytosis in mouse pancreatic B-cells
We have monitored L-type Ca2+ channel activity, local cytoplasmic Ca2+ transients, the distribution of insulin-containing secretory granules and exocytosis in individual mouse pancreatic B-cells. Subsequent to the opening of the Ca2+ channels, exocytosis is initiated with a latency < 100 ms. The entry of Ca2+ that precedes exocytosis is unevenly distributed over the cell and is concentrated to the
Effects of FK506 on regeneration and macrophages in injured rat sciatic nerve.
Effects of FK506 [5.0 mg/kg body weight (BW), subcutaneous, daily] on nerve regeneration and presence of macrophages in lesioned rat sciatic nerves were studied. Models of autologous nerve graft or a nerve crush lesion were used and regeneration was evaluated by immunocytochemistry (also used to detect ED1/ED2 macrophages) and sensory pinch reflex test, respectively. Treatment with FK506 did not i
Modelling and evaluation of the effects of traffic safety measures Comparative analysis of driving assistance systems and road infrastructure
Improvement of road traffic safety is an important policy issue. Various categories of meas-ures are available to effectuate this. The thesis focuses on two categories: road infrastructure and driv-ing assistance systems. A relevant policy question is if certain driving assistance systems may be de-sirable substitutes for infrastructure measures, in terms of traffic safety effects and other releva
Cardiovascular mortality and morbidity in seven counties in Sweden in relation to water hardness and geological settings. The project: myocardial infarction in mid-Sweden
An east-west regional gradient in cardiovascular mortality was found within seven counties in mid-Sweden during the years 1969-1983. The mortality differences were of considerable magnitude for ischaemic heart disease (IHD) as well as for stroke. In previous reports, in which the distribution of risk factors among middle-aged men was presented, the moderate variation among the communities could no
Survival of mammalian cells exposed to ultrahigh dose rates from a laser-produced plasma x-ray source
PURPOSE: To determine whether intense laser-produced x rays have an increased radiation hazard. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Mammalian cells were exposed to x rays from a laser-produced plasma that produced ultrahigh peak absorbed dose rates, up to a factor of 10(10) higher than those produced by conventional x rays used in imaging. The cell survival was studied as a function of the absorbed dose. The s

Efter underkännandet beslöt alltså den teologiska fakulteten i Lund att kalla Segerstedt tilOn 1st September 1903, the Faculty of Theology at the University of Lund took the decision to appoint Torgny Segerstedt as a senior lecturer in spite of his failed doctoral dissertation. The public defence of his thesis had taken place on 28th May in the same year before the Faculty of Theology at Uppsala. It was thus after his failure that the Faculty at Lund nevertheless decided to invite him to
