Modulation of islet G-proteins, alpha-glucosidehydrolase inhibition and insulin release stimulated by various secretagogues

Guanine nucleotide-binding proteins (G-proteins) are known to act as important modulators of insulin release from the islets of Langerhans. We have recently found that the deoxynojirimycin-derivative emiglitate, a recognized inhibitor of intestinal alpha-glucosidehydrolase activity, is a powerful inhibitor of glucose-induced insulin release. With the use of isolated mouse islets the present invest

Zebris versus myrin: A comparative study between a three-dimensional ultrasound movement analysis and an inclinometer/compass method - Intradevice reliability, concurrent validity, intertester comparison, intratester reliability, and intraindividual variability

Study Design. Experimental study. Objectives. To compare two devices for measuring cervical range of motion, a three-dimensional ultrasound motion device (Zebris) and a gravity-reference goniometer (Myrin). Summary of Background Data. Assessment of cervical range of motion is used to evaluate the effect of different treatments, determine impairment, and ascertain the relationship between neck diso

Intestinal Mucosa Reconstitution and Protection: Impact of Luminal Factors

The gastrointestinal mucosa is one of the most rapidly proliferating tissues in the body, and serves as a barrier to luminal bacteria and toxins. Enteral nutrition, luminal fiber and probiotics are of crucial importance for the integrity of this barrier. We examined the potential beneficial effects of lactobacilli and fiber on methotrexate-induced enterocolitis and radiation-induced intestinal inj

Varicella zoster in Guinea-Bissau: intensity of exposure and severity of infection

OBJECTIVE: To describe the epidemiology of and risk factors for severe chickenpox in Guinea- Bissau. METHODS: A prospective household study in a semiurban area of the capital. Severity was assessed by number of pox, fever response and presence of pneumonia. Severity was compared for the first case in a house, that is, the index case, and the secondary cases infected at home. RESULT: We identified

Conflict Prevention: Old Wine in New Bottles?

This essay examines the extent to which scholarly work offers new insights into the problematique of conflict prevention and whether there are any significant alterations in the international management of conflict. The existing literature generally exhibits a number of methodological and theoretical weaknesses, which makes conflict prevention less useful as an analytical concept. In practice, sta

Evidence in action: a Thompsonian perspective on evidence-based decision-making in social work

Evidence-based practice presupposes evidence-based decision-making. In the debate it is argued that a social work fashioned after evidence should be more rational, less authoritarian and built on scientific knowledge, respect and ethics. Yet the empirical evidence that this idea works is weak. In fact the difficulties met during efforts to implement evidence could be a sound reaction. Indeed diffi

Delineation of the earliest lineage commitment steps of haematopoietic stem cells: new developments, controversies and major challenges

Purpose of review This review addresses recently reported evidence for alternative cellular pathways for haematopoietic stem cell lineage commitment. Recent findings Using various approaches, several laboratories suggested the existence of adult as well as foetal multipotent progenitor cells with combined B cell, T cell and granulocyte/macrophage potential, but little or no megakaryocyte/erythroid

Changing Mobility Pattern and the Aging Population in Sweden

A number of Investigations of travel habits and patterns of activity of the elderly have been carried out In Sweden during the 1980s. The results from a study made by the Department of Traffic Planning and Engineering at the Lund Institute ofTechnology are presented. The purpose of this study was to determine (a) older people's access to various means of transportation, (b) travel habits of older

Entering Modernity: The Marginalisation of the Poor in the Developing Countries : An Account of Theoretical Perspectives from the 1940's to the 1980's

Jag göt det genom att bevisa att deras handlingar är rationella; de måste ta itu med ekonomiska, sociala, politiska och kulturella hinder som härmIn the present doctoral dissertation an attempt is made to qualify the theorertical assumptions about the marginal characret of the popular sectors of the developing countries. According to these theories, individuals belonging to the populart sectors cannot become fully members of their societies because they lack the attitudinal prerequisites. My argument is that their actions are quite sophisti

Hepatitis C in chronic liver disease: an epidemiological study based on 566 consecutive patients undergoing liver biopsy during a 10-year period

We analysed the presence of hepatitis C virus (HCV) antibodies in 566 patients undergoing liver biopsy. While over 20% of the patients were anti-HCV positive according to ELISA, only 13.8% had HCV antibodies when tested with a four-antigen recombinant immunoblot assay (RIBA 2). At the time of inclusion in the study, most patients were asymptomatic, irrespective of whether they were HCV-positive. H

Teologi på andra sidan Hippos stadsmur

This article addresses two main questions both of which are raised by Risto Nurmela’s comparison between Judaism and Christianity, the first being the statement that Christology ”of course” is the dividing line between the two religions. This assertion must be refined in order to be applicable since (1) it gives vent to only one of two perspectives (i.e. it articulates only the Christian position)

Status of design and construction of the Transition Radiation Tracker (TRT) for the ATLAS experiment at the LHC

The ATLAS Inner Detector consists of three sub-systems, the Pixel Detector at the innermost radius, the Semi-Conductor Tracker at intermediate radii, and the Transition Radiation Tracker (TRT) at the outermost radius in front of the electromagnetic calorimeter. The TRT provides a combination of continuous tracking with many projective measurements based on individual drift-tubes (or straws) and of

27 tonåringar i åldern 13-16 år undersöktes 2-3 månader efter dThe aim of the study is to improve on the understanding of the implications for adolescents of being placed in foster care. The basis for the study is that the adolescents´ previous relationship with their parents has significance for the manner in which the adolescents will handle the separation from the parents and how they will relate to foster parents. 27 adolescents aged 13-16 years were exam
