A fast and simple method for classification of soil bacterial-populations
A simple method is described for a rough classification of soil bacterial populations. The method makes use of a commercially available biochemical test system and the test results are analysed in a multivariate classification program on a microcomputer. The method was used for classification of bacteria from rape rhizosphere.
Mezen Bay - a key area for understanding Weichselian glaciations in northern Russia
Sediment successions in coastal cliffs around Mezen Bay, southeastern White Sea, record an unusually detailed history of former glaciations, interstadial marine and fluvial events from the Weichselian. A regional glaciation model for the Weichselian is based on new data from the Mezen Bay area and previously published data from adjacent areas. Following the Mikulinian (Eemian) interglacial a shelf

Copolymers of 1,5-dioxepan-2-one and L- or D,L-dilactide: in vivo degradation behaviour
Copolymers of 1,5-dioxepan-2-one (DXO) and L- or D,L-dilactide have been synthesized and characterized. The molar ratio of the two monomers was around 20/80 of DXO and L- or D,L-lactide respectively. In vivo studies on rats revealed significant differences in tissue response between the semicrystalline DXO/L-LA copolymer and the amorphous DXO/D,L-LA copolymer. The materials were characterized pre-
An experimental set-up for studying acrylamide formation in potato crisps
The objective of this work was to set up lab-scale equipment for production of crisps mimicking industrial conditions. Slices of Saturna potatoes were deep-fat fried for 2-4.5 min at 160 °C. A solid phase extraction method for acrylamide from potato crisps was used, and the extraction recovery was calculated to 95%. Acrylamide was analysed using liquid chromatography tandem mass spectrometry. The

Interactions between economic growth and environmental quality in Shenzhen, China's first special economic zone
The relationship between economic development and environmental quality is a debated topic. Environmental Kuznets curve (EKC) is one prominent hypothesis, positing an inverted U-shaped development-environment relationship. Here we test this hypothesis using data from Shenzhen, People's Republic of China. Established in 1980 as the first special economic zone in China, Shenzhen has developed from a
Investigations of random pair densities and the application to the N-representability problem
We show that random pair densities that can arise from a many-body wavefunction have a distinct distribution of their eigenvalues, when interpreted as a kernel of an integral operator. This gives a probabilistic condition for pair densities as well as two-particle density matrices to be obtainable from a wavefunction. The condition depends on the number of particles in the system.
Platelet and adipocyte thermogenesis in hypothyroid patients: a microcalorimetric study
Direct microcalorimetry was used for measurements of heat production in cell suspensions of platelets and adipocytes, obtained from hypothyroid patients before and after 3 months on full L-thyroxine substitution. Platelet heat production was significantly lower than normal before treatment and increased in all 10 patients studied; the mean value increased from 51.3 +/- 1.6 fW/cell before to 57.1 +

Polyarteritis nodosa when applying the Chapel Hill nomenclature--a descriptive study on ten patients.
Objectives. Polyarteritis nodosa (PAN) is a term that has been used to describe a wide variety of vasculitic conditions. In 1994, the Chapel Hill Consensus Conference on the nomenclature of systemic vasculitides proposed that the name classical PAN should be restricted to diseases where there is arteritis in small and medium-sized arteries without the involvement of smaller vessels. Our aim was to
Release of intracellular calcium and stimulation of cell growth by ATP and histamine in human ovarian cancer cells (SKOV-3)
The effects of ATP and histamine on cell proliferation and intracellular calcium concentrations ([Ca2+]i) were examined in the human ovarian cancer cell line SKOV-3. Micromolar concentrations of ATP induced a biphasic increase in [Ca2+]i representing a rapid rise to a peak level followed by a smaller but more sustained phase. When influx of extracellular calcium was blocked by calcium chelation to
Genetically engineered peptide fusions for improved protein partitioning in aqueous two-phase systems - Effect of fusion localization on endoglucanase I of Trichoderma reesei
Genetic engineering has been used for fusion of the peptide tag, Trp-Pro-Trp-Pro, on a protein to study the effect on partitioning in aqueous two-phase systems. As target protein for the fusions the cellulase, endoglucanase I (endo-1,4-β-d-glucan-4-glucanohydrolase, EC 3.2.1.4, EGI, Cel7B) of Trichoderma reesei was used. For the first time a glycosylated two-domain enzyme has been utilized for add
Routine ultrasound examination at 12 or 18 gestational weeks for prenatal detection of major congenital heart malformations? A randomised controlled trial comprising 36 299 fetuses.
Objective To compare the rate of prenatal diagnosis of heart malformations between two policies of screening for heart malformations. Design Randomised controlled trial. Setting Six university hospitals, two district general hospitals. Sample A total of 39 572 unselected pregnancies randomised to either policy. Methods The 12-week policy implied one routine scan at 12 weeks including measurement o

Monophasic Action Potential Mapping in Swine and Humans Using Modified-tip Ablation Catheter and Electroanatomic Mapping System.
OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the feasibility of monophasic action potential (MAP) mapping using a modified-tip NaviStar catheter in swine and humans. METHODS: MAP mapping was performed using the modified-tip catheter at 71 +/- 21 atrial and 60 +/- 16 ventricular sites in 10 healthy pigs and at 56 ventricular sites in one patient, and using an ordinary Navi-Star catheter at 30 atrial sites in one patient

Method to Save Silicon Area by Increasing the Filter Order
The authors' intention is to show that there are other criteria when optimising digital filters than minimising the filter order. The final result in the form of minimum silicon area or few machine cycles in a high-speed custom DSP are aims that are important in a custom design process. It is not an axiom that the minimum order of the filter gives the optimum result. Algorithms with trivial coeffi
